Thursday 6th Oct.2011 – bike (Most of the Canal de la Robine ) 36 n/miles!!!!! ***** Sunny and hot
Top night in our spot in the hills behind Gruissan, up early and watch the sun rise over the Med :) and it’s my 58th birthday today so I opened Mags present and some cards:)Then we do our exercises as the hunters start to arrive and drive past higher up into the hills!!! A bit disturbed with the little cars going past and the hordes of mosquitoes swarming above our heads and then the shotguns start going off so we think it’s time to move on!!! With light wind early drove past the beach and headed for the lock on the Canal de la Robine at Grand Mandirac for breakfast before setting off up the canal towards Narbonne. There are a couple of fields of what looks like rice - well it’s a long grass, wheat crop planted in water and the fields are absolutely full of large birds searching for frogs etc!!! We saw Storks – white and black, Herons – grey and purple, Great and little Egrets and two kingfishers, it was amazing :) After about a mile towards Narbonne the wind picked up but after a call to Pete decided to carry with the bike trip and save myself for ‘Big Friday’ We arrived at Narbonne which was nice loads of pleasure craft and tree lined squares by the canal, shame about a few beggars :( Mag said let’s get out of the town and look for somewhere quiet for lunch and we ended up another couple of miles along by a lock just short of Moussoulens where we stopped for croissants and cheese and watch a Red Kite chase a flock of crows which was amazing.. We carried on another mile to the bridge at Moussoulens where we shared our apple with a lovely donkey:) With the breeze now behind us we get back to Narbonne at a good pace and stop for a birthday ice-cream under the cool trees :) We make it back to the van about 4:30 shot to pieces and have tea and biscuits before heading downstream toward Port-la-Nouvelle and this is spectacular as the canal passes in-between two etangs so we are surrounded by water with the Med and 20 kitesurfers in the back ground!!! I get a puncture and have to mend it by the lock just short of Nouville and we make it all the way and search out a patisserie for some birthday cake. It’s now time for the 5/6 mile trip back into a strong head wind and we are knackered!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We manage to fill the bottle up by the first lock and make it back just before dark passing a field full of black cows with cattle egrets underneath them! We covered 36 n/miles in total (sorry my gps is set up for windsurfing) that’s over 40 miles and I was saving myself for windsurfing tomorrow!!! We are now parked up at Port la Nautique in the shelter of some trees and it’s blowing a gale – I bet it will be too windy tomorrow :(
